The impact of our work...
Happy Kids Cambodia has raised funds through donations, fundraising events & charity merchandise sales to carry out the following initiatives:
SUPPORTING FREE TO SHINE - SIEM REAP & SURROUNDS
HKC has been able to support two entire villages for one year, through Free To Shine's 'secure a village' program! This means that 26 young girls on Free to Shine's program across two Cambodian villages, will receive access to monthly family visits, school resources, curriculum classes, and family vegetable gardens, as well as training for their community and two houses built for two families most in need. These resources are key in ensuring these girls are kept in school and safe from trafficking and exploitation.
HKC has also contributed to Free to Shine's University Program; helping 29 young women continue to pursue their academic dreams and create change in their communities.
SUPPORTING CAMBODIAN CHILDREN'S TRUST (CCT)
HKC are key supporters of CCT's Community Outreach Program; street outreach, medical outreach and engagement.
CCT's program facilitates social workers & nurses visiting vulnerable children & their families on the streets of Battambang and other communities within the Battambang Province. This program's key objectives are:
• To meet with and engage with vulnerable children and families in their own environment or community
• To provide basic services on the street and in local communities, to support the safety and wellbeing of children
• To refer vulnerable children and families to CCT’s other programs or partners
• To provide a direct child protection service in vulnerable communities
• To collect and share information about vulnerable children and families including an understanding of their needs
This community service that CCT provides, includes the provision of basic health supplies (toothbrushes, clean drinking water, first aid kits, condoms, soap, etc), workshops for parents including skilful parenting& alcohol support groups, and a mobile library is available for the children whilst parents are utilising this outreach station.
SUPPORTING BEEKEEPER PARADE
Beekeeper was a project which blossomed from a promise between a brother and sister, to now a dedicated mission to make a difference in the world. Beekeeper empowers Cambodian people in Phnom Penh through employment opportunities on a fair wage, substantially above the average, to create beautiful products through up-cycling fashion waste. Profits are directed towards funding English programs in 5 Cambodian schools, and also a solar energy initiative for one of those schools, to create access to clean, renewable energy sources. Beekeeper is committed to the environment, to supporting people, encouraging others to 'bee more' and fighting for quality education for all children. Happy Kids Cambodia are supporting Beekeeper Parade during the month of May 2018.
SUPPORT OF JIMMY'S VILLAGE SCHOOL IN SIEM REAP
Since HKC was founded over two and a half years ago, we have been sending funds on a quarterly basis to Jimmy’s Village School to cover all day-to-day costs which include stationary, electricity, photocopy paper, books, and teaching resources. During this time, the implementation of our monthly donor program enabled us to begin contributing a monetary wage for Jimmy, the founder or JVS. Prior to this, Jimmy was running the school in a 100% volunteer capacity, using his own money earned from tuk tuk driving work to cover costs. This school is now well known to many supporters globally, and children who have graduated from JVS display impressive English skills. We have been privileged enough to find out that some have successfully secured jobs through their ability to speak English. Our work has concluded with Jimmy’s Village School as of the end of May 2017.
OUR “DRIVE CAMBODIA’S FUTURE” PROJECT
Through a crowdfunding campaign we launched in April 2017, we raised funds to begin a project that we named “Drive Cambodia’s Future”. The project was to set up a mobile school, so that free English classes could be offered to children in rural villages in Siem Reap’s surrounds. Prior to our work with Jimmy’s Village School concluding, we also saw this as a way for the students of JVS to continue to be able to access free English education in the event that JVS closed down as a result of land sale.
A number of the HKC team travelled to Siem Reap for the month of May 2017 to begin implementation of the project! We successfully purchased an appropriate vehicle, and began customisation to transform the truck into a mobile school. Due to unforeseeable events with the our previous beneficiary in Siem Reap, this project was sadly unable to eventuate. The vehicle has since been re-diverted to Cambodian Children's Trust, who are transforming it into a mobile library and will utilise it to facilitate their rural community outreach program; providing education, healthcare checks and social worker visits to children and their families in Cambodia's countryside.
SCHOOL/SHELTER STRUCTURE IN BANTEAY OUMPEL VILLAGE
In May 2017, our charity funded materials for the construction of a structure + furniture in a rural village approx. 40km from Siem Reap city. This village is isolated to an extent, due to poor road access and depending on the time of year; flooding. The structure was built by a group of 10 village men, who as a community, have contributed to their children having a shelter from the harsh weather which can potentially be used for village classes.
